Review: Apple Cemetery by Anna Bovaller
Actually, I feel like the host hypocrite. Why? Well, I finished my review of the heater as follows: "In other respects, much the same again from Svinajakten but despite that, I feel that I am far from finished with Anna Bovaller and her alter ego (?) Petra Wester. Luckily, I immediately throw me over Apple Cemetery
when it is already waiting in my bookshelf. "
The thing is that I already had started the third book in the series of Petra Wester and only a few pages into it I got the feeling it would not even be a book for me. And it was not either. In fact, Apple Cemetery is one of the worst I've read in a long time. It may seem somewhat odd, since I have been quite overwhelming in favor of the two predecessors, but in fact is the reason as simple as logical.
Apple Cemetery has everything that I absolutely do not like a crime novel .
But, let's start from the beginning!
Petra Wester sent on a secret mission to Budapest, where she will meet "Mr. K". It is supported by her new colleague Krisztina Lovas that has its roots in Hungary. Along for the ride is Petra's daughter Martina, and already the first evening the whole gang goes home to Krisztinas parents for dinner.
So far so good!
The day after the kidnapping, however, Martina, and then track everything out completely. The language is often woefully with repetitions that are not even worthy of a beginner, internal monologues are plentiful but they do not move the action forward, but rather acts as a kind of recapitulation of what we already know, the story that opens the book is largely up in smoke and are never seen again, a side story, but both rhyme as reason - present themselves and it has neither a beginning nor an actual end, new character shows up that I absolutely would have done just fine without, and so on., and so on.
I've said it before and I'll say it again: I absolutely hate it when the investigators' personal life takes up too much space in the document. Some writers can handle this fairly neat but Anna Bovaller are definitely not among them.
That this book at all receive a rating may Bovaller thank laurels for!
